Appleby Horse Fair:
2nd to 8th June 2011
Held annually on Fair Hill, about one mile north of the town centre, the Horse Fair has been held here since 1750, prior to which it was held in the town. Appleby Horse Fair is one of the largest horse fairs in Europe and its timing is determined by the second Wednesday in June which is always the last day, noon on the previous Thursday being the time when travellers are first allowed on Fair Hill. Prior to this travellers may be seen encamped in the surrounding area. At fair time up to 1600 caravans are parked on the hill, ranging from the traditional horse-drawn vardos to modern units towed by cars.
