KNOCK PIKE
Start
Point: Milburn Grange Holiday Cottages (NY 671280)
Distance:
6.1 Km (3.8 miles)
Ascent:
100 meters
Time: 1.0hrs.
Directions:
Turn left out of the gate to Milburn Grange Holiday Cottages into
the lane leading to the farm. Between the main farmhouse and some
outbuildings with green doors is a track leading through a gate
to a field. Walk across the field to the rear corner of the 'coldstore'
and cross the style. Continue along the perimeter fence to the coldstore
until anmother style is reached. Cross this style before dropping
into a ditch which is traversed by a rudimentary footbridge. Up
the bank, then across the field in a Southeasterly direction to
a gate across the end of the track leading to Close House Farm (NY678277).
Follow the track into the farmyard and to the tarmac road leading
up to the summit of Great Dun Fell. Turn left (Northeast) onto the
road and proceed up the hill, past the Christian Centre, through
a wood and thence alongside Knock Pike. Upon reaching the disused
quarry (on your left at NY 686288) the track to the right is obvious.
Cross
the cattle grid and follow the track in a Southeasterly direction
behind the Pike until you meet a path above the Swindale Beck (NY
690284). Turn right (Southwest), heading downhill to a wooden style
over a drystone wall. Cross the style and continue alongside Knock
Pike to a gated wall with a 'squeeze' style. Through the style and
head South across the field to the head of a track (NY 687277),
enclosed on either side by a drystone wall. Follow the track (usually
very muddy) until you reach the farm. Turn right (Northwest) onto
the tarmac road and walk through the fellside village of Knock.
Continue along the road, up the hill to the bottom of the Fell road
and on to Silverband where you will find the village store and thence
back to Milburn Grange (NY 671280).

directions are provided for guidance only. This walk should not
be attempted without a compass and a suitable map (OS Landranger
